Birmingham City are reportedly set to sack manager Pep Clotet and have lined up Coventry City boss Mark Robins as his potential successor.

The Spaniard took charge of the Blues in the summer after the sacking of Garry Monk, having previously served as Monk's assistant manager.

Birmingham lost a number of key players in the summer, such as top scorer Che Adams and captain Michael Morrison, and have made an underwhelming start to the season.

Clotet's side are 16th in the Championship as things stand–six points adrift of the top six and eight points above the relegation zone.

It appears the Birmingham hierarchy are unhappy with the way things are going under the 42-year-old as, according to TEAMtalk, they are set to sack the Spanish coach.

The report claims that the Blues are keen on bringing in Robins as his replacement.

Coventry have made a strong start to the season and currently sit fifth in League One.

Following interest from Sunderland, Robins signed a new deal with the Sky Blues this season, however, it is understood that it contains a release clause–leaving the Blues optimistic they can land the 49-year-old.

Clotet's side face Millwall at St Andrew's this afternoon.

The Verdict

Birmingham have been underwhelming this season but given the amount of change at the club in the summer, it seems like a harsh move to me to pull the plug on Clotet already.

The Blues do look in danger of a season of mid-table mediocrity but in all honesty, I'm not sure they have the quality in their squad to push for the play-offs.

Robins has done an excellent job at Coventry, so I can certainly see the appeal of bringing him in to replace their current boss and the release clause in his current deal does mean the move is plausible.
