Defender Alan Hutton has become the latest Aston Villa start to pay tribute to Gabriele Agbonlahor after the striker announced his retirement from football.

The 32-year-old made the announcement on Wednesday night and Hutton took to Instagram to pay tribute to his former teammate soon after.

Posting to his Instagram story, Hutton shared a photograph of the pair celebrating together and simply wrote: “Enjoy your retirement”.

Apart from two loan spells away with Watford and Sheffield Wednesday, Agbonlahor spent his entire career at Villa Park, racking up nearly 400 appearances in that time.

He bagged 86 goals along the way, including 73 in the Premier League, becoming the club’s all-time top-scorer in the competition in the process.

Villa will have reignited hopes of making a return to that level this season after winning four matches in a row to push them back into the Championship’s top-six.

This weekend sees Blackburn Rovers visit Villa Park as they look to continue their impressive run of form.

The verdict

Having played together for such a long time, it is no surprise to see a lot of respect between Hutton and Agbonlahor.

How long the Scot has with the club also remains to be seen with Dean Smith remaining keen to freshen things up at Villa Park in the summer.
