Aston Villa right-back Alan Hutton has revealed that he did not realise how far from goal he was when he set off on his run to score Villa's fourth in a 4-2 victory against Birmingham City on Sunday, report the club

Goals from Jonathan Kodjia, Jack Grealish and Tammy Abraham had given the home side a 3-2 lead against their fierce rivals before the Scot's mazy run and finish put the result to bed.

"I didn't realise I'd picked it up so deep," Hutton said.

"As I ran forward things just seemed to keep opening up for me. I thought their centre-back was going to come out but he just kept running back.

"That made my mind up for me really."

Lukasz Jutkiewicz had given Garry Monk's side the lead before two quickfire goals from Kodjia and Grealish meant Villa went into the break in front.

A penalty from Abraham early in the second half appeared to have killed things off but Kristian Pedersen's fine finish for the Blues put the result back in doubt.

But Hutton's now iconic goal secured the local bragging rights and pushed Dean Smith's side up into eighth place and just four points outside the playoffs.

Villa host Nottingham Forest in the Championship on Tuesday night and could jump above Aitor Karanka's side with a win.

The verdict

I do not think anyone could quite believe what they were seeing when Hutton started bombing forward.

The defending from Monk's side was absolutely woeful which, personally, detracts significantly from the quality of the goal.

But you have to admire Hutton's persistence and confidence to take the shot on.
