BBC Sport have announced that striker Adebayo Akinfenwa has turned down a new contract at Gillingham and will now leave the club.
The 32 year-old striker was offered a new deal by the club last week but the two haven’t been able to agree terms meaning Akinfenwa is now looking for a new club for next season.
Known for his strength and power, Akinfenwa first joined Gillingham at the beginning of the 2010/11 season where he scored 11 goals in 46 games before moving back to previous club Northampton. He then rejoined The Gills in the summer of 2013 after his release by The Cobblers and last season the striker contributed 10 goals in 34 league appearances.
When asked about the situation, Gillingham manager Peter Taylor said, “I have the utmost respect for Bayo; he has been a superb ambassador for Gillingham and scored some very important goals for us last season.”
Taylor added, “He has been a model professional, a great character to have around the place and I have very much enjoyed working with him.”
