Nottingham Forest manager Aitor Karanka has admitted he still needs time to assess his squad as he weighs up what additions are needed this month.

The new Reds boss took charge of his first game yesterday as Forest fell to a 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa at the City Ground.

And, speaking to the Nottingham Post, Karanka revealed he needs longer to get to know the current crop. "I do not know the number (of signings needed) yet, because we have not had time to properly look at that."

I have not had time to look at new players, because I wanted to respect the players who are already here. When I have got to know them better; when I know how well the club is working, I will have a better idea of what is needed."

Despite that, the same report reckons the ex-Boro boss is keen on raiding his former club for three players.

Daniel Ayala, Grant Leadbitter and Adam Clayton are all targets for the Reds, although a move for the latter is far more likely given that the first two players started for Tony Pulis' side yesterday.

The Verdict

It's clear that Aitor Karanka wants to make additions to his squad and even though he isn't giving much away, Forest fans should expect new additions.

Looking at players from Boro makes sense, they're proven winners at this level and all excelled under Karanka, although Clayton looks the most realistic at the moment.

Either way, Forest supporters will be glad to see the club are linked with players of that standard and now it's down to the owner to back Karanka in the market.
