Nottingham Forest are expected to have a very busy summer as Aitor Karanka looks to build a squad that is capable of challenging for promotion.

And, he has taken the first steps already by recruiting former Reds defender Michael Dawson who has rejoined the club on a two-year deal after his contract at Hull City had expired.

The 34-year old will add experience and strength to the Forest defence but Karanka revealed Dawson’s influence won’t be restricted to on the pitch.

I’m really pleased because I always said that Michael is more than just a player. He knows how big and how important this club is and he wanted to come back,” he told the official site.

He’s a really good player and a great character so he’ll be very useful for us both on and off the pitch and they’re the sort of players we’re looking for.”

The former Boro boss insisted he still had big expectations for Dawson this season.

This is not just a romantic signing for us. It’s no good building a team of leaders off the pitch if they aren’t good players on it.”

The Verdict

Forest needed defensive additions and Dawson does look like he will be a smart capture for the club.

As Karanka says, he will help a lot with his mentality and professionalism which will make him a key influence in the changing room.

It’s vital you bring in characters like that and Dawson could be the first of many summer arrivals at the City Ground.
