Nottingham Forest manager Aitor Karanka has admitted that he hopes right-back Saidy Janko will have a future at the club past his current loan spell.

The 22-year-old was brought in on the loan window deadline day from Porto, and has impressed immediately after being thrown straight into the side against Swansea City and then against Sheffield Wednesday on Wednesday night.

“At the time he signed, I just wanted us to get the player," Karanka admitted to the Nottingham Post.

"We were playing a lot of games during that period, it was the last day of the market and I was just thinking that I wanted to get a player in.

“As a manager, of course, he is a player you would like to have here for a long time."

Janko made 21 appearances in Ligue 1 last season whilst out on loan with St. Etienne, but fell out of favour massively towards the end of the season.

But, he has become an immediate favourite of the Forest fans because of his positive running and industrious attitude in defence.

He has previously appeared four times for the Switzerland under-21 side but is yet to receive a call-up to the first-team squad.

Forest beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 at the City Ground on Wednesday to claim just their second win in the opening eight games of the season.

The Reds host Rotherham United on Saturday.

The Verdict

Keeping Janko beyond this season would obviously be great for Forest, but they really need to focus on the job at hand right now.

It is after all just one win. Making sure they do not fall back into a similar slump as before should be Karanka's top priority right now.
