The future of Aiden McGeady is likely to be a talking point with the Stadium of Light faithful, as the midfielder looks to make a positive impression out on loan with Charlton Athletic.

The 33-year-old had a hugely impressive season with Sunderland in the 2018/19 campaign, as he scored 14 goals and was on hand to provide six assists.

But it was reported by the Sunderland Echo that McGeady had been involved in an incident on the club's training ground, which saw his game time limited this season.

McGeady moved to Charlton Athletic on loan for the remainder of the campaign, and has since made two appearances for the Addicks in the Championship.

Speaking in an interview with South London Press, McGeady revealed that he hasn't given much thought about his future plans, but is remaining focused on life with Lee Bowyer's side.

"I haven’t thought too much about the future.

"I want to take it month by month and see how I do at Charlton, try to help the team progress up the league."

"As far as staying beyond that, I’ve not really thought about it. Who knows what will happen in football? It’s only two or three months ago I was playing at Sunderland, something changes and you’re at a different team.

"Football changes very quickly."

The experienced Irishman stated that he would potentially look at signing permanently for Charlton Athletic, but knows that he has to force his way into the starting XI on a regular basis in the near future.

"If that was a possibility – staying beyond the end of the season – then of course it’s something I’d be looking at. I’m hoping that can maybe happen but it is down to me to start playing games and getting a run in the side."

McGeady and his Charlton Athletic team-mates are back in action this weekend, when they take on relegation-threatened Luton Town at The Valley.

The Verdict:

His days at Sunderland are likely to be numbered.

McGeady fell out of favour with the Black Cats after an incident on the club's training ground, and it didn't come as a surprise to see him head out on loan for the remainder of this year's campaign.

Even if Sunderland don't win promotion back into the Championship this season, I would still expect to the winger leave the club in the summer.

If McGeady can make a good impression with Charlton Athletic, then you have to imagine that the Addicks will make an attempt at making his loan move a permanent one.
