On Thursday evening, Millwall announced that Shaun Williams had agreed on a new deal with the club.

The 31-year-old midfielder signed a new one-year extension with the club to take his contract to the summer of 2020.

Williams captained the Lions in Wednesday’s defeat to QPR and capped his second international appearance with a goal in the most recent international round of games.

And after signing his new deal, the Millwall man took to Twitter to express his delight at agreeing to terms on an improved contract.

Since his move from MK Dons four years ago and has made 203 appearances for the London club, scoring 16 goals, his most recent coming in the win against Derby County in August.

Despite a poor start to the season, Williams had enjoyed success during his time at The Den, including two Wembley appearances and a promotion to the Championship.

Millwall head to West Brom this weekend hoping to end a run of five games without a win, and the composed midfielder will be looking to get back to producing his best for his club.

The Verdict

Shaun Williams has become a fans’ favourite during his time at The Den.

Initially, he was not as revered as he is today but over time his assured performances in the middle of the park have seen his popularity sore amongst the club’s supporters.

Arguing one of Millwall’s most important players, the contract extension shows Millwall’s loyalty to the Republic of Ireland international, as well as Williams’ to the club.

Him expressing his delight on social media exudes class and endears him more to the fans than it already had.

And in what has been a poor start to the new season, this news is most welcome and could be a catalyst to an improved set of results.
