It's been revealed in the Daily Record that Scotland boss Alex McLeish could recall Oliver Burke to the international side, almost two years after he last appeared for the Tartan Army.

Burke, currently on loan at Celtic, has struggled to make an impression since leaving Nottingham Forest for Leipzig in 2016, but his recent displays for the Hoops have seen him getting back to doing what he does best.

He's looking to put his disastrous spell in Germany behind him and, if he gets his way, also rid himself of his West Brom experience too.

The 21-year-old has been to a lot of places and seen a lot of things in his short spell as a professional. He's been involved in transfer deals worth almost £30m, but has rarely lived up to the hype he generated whilst at Forest.

Up in Scotland he's been free of the pressure of the big price tag. Moving there on loan has lifted the burden and allowed him to settle into a decent squad without expectation. Freed of that millstone around his neck, he's played with more verve and expression.

Scotland isn't a bad place for a young player to develop, especially not a Kirkcaldy-born Scot such as Burke. The level of competition certainly isn't as high up there and taking out Rangers and maybe Aberdeen the standard is bottom end Championship at best.

That why Burke must be desperate to stay. Even before McLeish started talking up his chances he wanted to remain at Parkhead, so now he'll be so focused on it that it'll drive him on further.

In the space of a few months he's gone from West Brom Under 23's and the EFL Cup to playing in front of almost 60,000 fans. He's thrived and could now be handed his old life back, the one where he's young and exciting, an integral part of his club and his country set up.

Alex McLeish could be about to deliver the final bit of motivation Burke needs to force a Celtic move and he's likely to want to grab it with both hands.
