Swindon Town are in the midst of a summer rebuild following their relegation to League Two, and boss David Flitcroft will look to prepare his side to challenge for an instant return to the third tier.

Nine new faces have joined the County Ground side so far this summer, and the recent signing of winger Donal McDermott has only served to increase the excitement surrounding the Wiltshire club’s avid fans.

Born in Dublin, McDermott began his career with Manchester City, and was at the club when the fortunes of Arab money began to pour into the side from the Etihad.

A series of big money imports restricted the player’s first team opportunities, and a series of loan spells made life difficult for the young player, as he was unable to settled.

A series of short spells followed his release from City, before the 27-year-old settled at Rochdale in 2015.

54 appearances over two years at Spotland was enough to earn McDermott an opportunity at Swindon, but many will argue that the player failed to fulfill the potential he showed whilst on the books at City.

McDermott will feel unlucky in the fact he was never considered for the first team due to the arrival of Sheikh Mansour’s money, and the player has seemingly never gotten over the rejection he encountered at the club.

McDermott had the potential and ability to succeed in the Premier League, but things just did not work out for the Irishman.

At the age of 27, McDermott still has time to prove his talents, and will view his move to Swindon as an opportunity to prove his doubters wrong.

If he can rediscover the talent that propelled him through the youth set up at City, the player could shine in League Two, and help fire the Robins to the promotion they so desperately crave.
