Stoke City are weighing up a move to bring midfielder Glenn Whelan back to the bet365 Stadium, The Stoke Sentinel have reported.

Whelan was released by Aston Villa on Saturday following the Midlands side's promotion to the Premier League, having made 73 appearances and scored two goals in all competitions for the club.

That has reportedly opened the door for a return to Stoke, who are said to be considering a move for Whelan as they look for reinforcements in midfield.

It is thought that Whelan would be keen to return to Stoke, having made 338 appearances for the club in all competitions for The Potters during a nine year spell at the club prior to his move to Aston Villa in the summer of 2017.

The report also claims that the Ireland international is expected to attract interest from elsewhere in the Championship in the summer transfer window, but that he would be strongly tempted by the possibility of a return to Stoke.

The verdict

This could be a good move for Stoke.

Despite being 35-years-old, Whelan still played a significant part in Aston Villa's promotion campaign this season, so he could still make a contribution as Stoke aim for the same result at the end of next season.

His knowledge of the club and experience in the game could also make him an important asset both on and off the pitch.
