12 months ago, Notts County were preparing for the Sky Bet League Two play-offs, after only just missing out on automatic promotion to League One.

The Magpies had made great strides under Kevin Nolan, and despite their semi-final defeat to Coventry City, the future looked bright under the former Newcastle United man. There was a real sense that Notts could go one step further this season, especially after signing the likes of Enzio Boldewijn, Kane Hemmings and Kristian Dennis for sizeable fees.

But you’ll struggle to see a greater fall from grace in the EFL for many a year, after what has been a catastrophic season for the East Midlands outfit. With just one game left to play this season, Neal Ardley’s men are on the brink of relegation to the National League for the first time in their 157-year history, and the World’s Oldest Football League club is at real risk of losing its prestigious status.

The Magpies sit two points adrift of safety in the league standings, meaning that Macclesfield Town need a point at home to Cambridge United next week to all but avoid the drop.

A season that promised so much for the Magpies has failed to deliver thus far, and those high-profile signings that arrived in the summer have simply failed to live up to expectations.

Enzio Boldewijn is a prime example of this - the Dutch winger arrived in the summer for a six-figure fee, after establishing himself as one of the best wingers in the league for Crawley Town over the last couple of years.

He started the season off in impressive style, netting three wonder-strikes in his first nine games, displaying the flair and power on the wings that Notts fans have been craving for ever since the days of Jack Grealish.

But after a long-term injury really hampered his season, the 26-year-old now finds himself massively out of favour under Ardley. In his last three appearances, he has been taken off, and was an unused substitute against Grimsby at the weekend.

After a hugely disappointing season both in and off the pitch, Boldewijn will surely be begging the summer to come sooner rather than later, and look to reignite his once promising career elsewhere...
