AFC Wimbledon had a poor season last year and suffered relegation down to League Two

However, this summer the club has announced the appointment of Johnnie Jackson as manager after his departure from Charlton Athletic.

The new boss has made it clear that his intentions are to take the Dons straight back up to League One next season and he has already made some good signings to strengthen his side in preparation.

According to London News Online, the club are now interested in signing striker John Marquis who is a free agent this summer after leaving Lincoln City at the end of his contract.

The 30-year-old started his career at Millwall coming up through the club's academy and made 52 Championship appearances for the side over the years.

The striker found his feet with Doncaster Rovers when he moved there in 2016 and scored 26 goals in 45 League Two appearances making him joint top scorer that season.

His good form continued as Rovers were promoted to League One and in 153 total appearances for the side, he scored 67 goals.

He has since played for Portsmouth in League One scoring 28 goals across three seasons and scored five in 20 league appearances for Lincoln last season after joining in the January transfer window.

No official move has been made yet but with the player available on a free transfer, Jackson is under no pressure to pounce on this one.

The Verdict:

This would be a good bit of business for AFC Wimbledon and set them up nicely for life in League Two next season.

Although Marquis is now 30-years-old, the striker has scored over 100 league goals in his career so far and has proven to be able to add to an attacking force consistently.

Furthermore, as a player that has shown his capabilities at both League One and League Two level, it doesn't feel like a short sighted signing either.

Given he is available on a free transfer this summer, it would be a great move from Jackson to get him in at the club and there's no doubt he would be able to add goals to the side seeking promotion next season.
