Not only did Bournemouth see off Brighton in a tight 2-0 win at the AMEX Stadium last Friday, but his wife gave birth to their third child on Friday morning.

A few hours later he found himself on the team bus before going on to help the Cherries to a vital three points.

"Thursday night my wife went into labour. She was awake all night and then had the baby at 8:30 in the morning. I travelled straight to Brighton, played the game and got a good win so it's great for me personally," said Surman to BBC Sport.

"I was awake all night and day, had 45 minutes with my daughter, got on the bus and travelled to Brighton for the game. Luckily I had a good night's sleep on Friday as my wife was in hospital but she's been keeping us up the past couple of nights."

Bournemouth hold a one point advantage at the top of the Championship table with Norwich and Watford in hot pursuit.

"I was awake all night and day, had 45 minutes with my daughter, got on the bus and travelled to Brighton for the game. Luckily I had a good night's sleep on Friday as my wife was in hospital but she's been keeping us up the past couple of nights."

Surman and his fellow midfield partner Harry Arter have been key for Eddie Howe’s side this season and they know that four wins from four will seal promotion.

And the former Norwich man knows that despite the pressure, it’s great to have the situation in their hands.

"We've got to be mentally right," he said. "It's down to us now, we win our last four games, we go up and that starts on Tuesday.

"It's great to have our destiny in our own hands and not rely on other teams and we want to keep it like that. We are fully focused on ourselves, it's a dangerous game to play if you start looking too far ahead because it can come back and bite you on the bum. You have to remain professional, switched on and focus.

"It's so tight, it's going to be an exciting finish and we want to make sure we are top of the pile at the end of it."

Bournemouth have another game on the south coast, as they travel to Reading, in another game where the hosts will be looking to spoil the party.
