Bournemouth are lining up a move for young Brentford defender Chris Mepham who has enjoyed a real breakthrough season with the Bees so far.

The 20-year old centre-back had been with Brentford’s B team over the years but progressed to the senior setup in the summer and was rewarded with a new long-term contract.

Since then, an injury to John Egan has opened up a place in the first XI and Mepham has taken that opportunity in style.

He has made 12 appearances so far this season, including playing the full ninety minutes for the last six league games of which the Bees have won five.

That hasn’t gone unnoticed and West London Sport are reporting that Bournemouth are stepping up their interest in the player who they had been watching since his B team days.

As well as that, Eddie Howe has recently made a visit to Griffin Park to watch the Wales U21 international close up.

Mepham has been on the books at Brentford since he was 14-years old having previously played for Chelsea’s academy.

The Verdict

Brentford fans will be slightly concerned by this news although there’s nothing to suggest that Mepham would want to move to Bournemouth.

If we’re realistic, he’s not going to get a game with the Cherries, so playing regular football for Dean Smith’s side is much better for his career development.

Nevertheless, if Bournemouth do come in with an offer it could be hard to turn down. The rumour also highlights how well the youngster has done in recent weeks and shows the potential he has.
