The January additions of Aaron Connolly and Folarin Balogun, from Brighton and Hove Albion and Arsenal respectively, have reduced the playing time Duncan Watmore has received at Middlesbrough.

Although, in a strange way, it has almost made his role within the squad more crucial as Boro push for promotion to the Premier League.

It certainly appears that Chris Wilder's first choice striking duo at The Riverside is Connolly and Balogun, but utilising Watmore to replace one of them against tiring defences in the closing exchanges of matches.

This tactic was devastating as Watmore chipped in with a goal and an assist off the bench in a 4-0 win at Peterborough United at the weekend.

Former winger Adrian Clarke offered his insight on Watmore's role as an impact substitute when he appeared on The Totally Football League Show.

He said: "It was a sensational substitute performance.

"He is unquestionably the best sub in the Championship, no one wants to be the best sub in the Championship, but it's not that bad, he's making a real impact.

"He's got 11 goal contributions this season, but seven of those have come as a sub.

"I don't think there is anything wrong with being an impact sub, I get why he's (Chris Wilder) sticking with that, rather than playing him, because he's delivering he's continuing to use Watmore as a sub."

Though Balogun and Connolly have not set the world alight since arriving on Teesside, they do seem to occupy defences really well which can increase the impact of Watmore or another substitute when they are introduced.

The Verdict

Neil Warnock deserves a lot of credit for plucking Watmore out of free agent obscurity last season, and providing Boro with a very effective player in the second tier.

The former Sunderland man's understanding with the Boro midfield is clear to see, as the likes of Matt Crooks and Marcus Tavernier know exactly where Watmore is, or where he is going to run, when they pick up possession.

The play-offs are building nicely towards an incredible crescendo, however if Middlesbrough beat Fulham on Wednesday night, there will be a small belief amongst the camp, that they can win all of their remaining games and put second placed Bournemouth under a bit of pressure.
