Adeboyejo starts: The predicted Barnsley XI to face Reading FC this weekend

Barnsley will be desperate to get themselves on the right tracks again against Reading this weekend, looking to take all three points away from the Select Car Leasing Stadium in their bid to drag themselves away from the relegation zone.

As things stand, they currently sit 22nd in the Championship table, although a win on Saturday afternoon could allow them to climb above relegation rivals Hull City, who won their last match before the international break against Middlesbrough.

The Tykes can’t buy a win at the moment, with Markus Schopp’s men last winning a league game in mid-August and failing to turn any of their five draws this season into wins.

23 questions about some of Barnsley’s best ever academy graduates – Can you score full marks?

How old is John Stones?

Although the concession of 14 goals in 11 games isn’t exactly ideal, it’s their attacking record that has let them down so far in 2021/22. Registering seven goals in these 11 matches is the type of scoring rate that will send them down – and this is a huge contrast from last season’s form under Valerien Ismael.

Many would argue that they’re missing the presence of former loanee Daryl Dike, with the United States international scoring nine goals in 19 Championship displays for the Tykes last term, but their attacking problems run deeper than that and many people would argue it boils down to the manager.

Schopp may only get one more game to save his job against a Reading side that have been in good form since the previous international break and richly benefitted from their summer additions, so the players he starts tomorrow afternoon could be crucial for the 47-year-old’s future at Oakwell.

But which 11 players will he go with ahead of tomorrow afternoon’s appointment with the Royals? We make our prediction.

One of the easiest picks was goalkeeper Brad Collins, who has been one of Barnsley’s standout players in a dark season so far and could be crucial in helping the Tykes win a point or three in Berkshire, keeping Jack Walton out of the starting lineup.

And for a side that almost kept a clean sheet against Millwall, only conceding an 89th-minute strike from Murray Wallace, the back three all keep their places with Toby Sibbick ready to enter the action.

Ben Williams remains on the left, with Callum Brittain also keeping his place. The latter was openly critical of his side recently for their lack of movement in possession, so it remains to be seen whether Schopp keeps him in the starting lineup as a potential leader on the pitch with Jordan Williams also available.

One man who won’t be featuring tomorrow though is Josh Benson, so the central midfield arguably picks itself with Callum Styles and Romal Palmer in the middle.

Mads Andersen, Aapo Halme, Obbi Oulare and Carlton Morris are also still out, with the latter being a big miss up top with his goals after impressing under Valerien Ismael last term.

Cauley Woodrow, Aaron Leya Iseka and Devante Cole started the last match against Millwall, but after firing a blank against Gary Rowett’s side, Schopp needs to switch it up and place faith in Dominik Frieser who seemed to do reasonably well earlier in the season. He’s also an orthodox wide option to give the South Yorkshire side something different going forward.

Victor Adeboyejo also comes in with a point to prove as he looks to end his goalscoring drought, but it remains to be seen whether they should stick with the same formation or switch up the system.

It would be hard to see Schopp switching things up after sticking with his main system for the most part – and he would have had a decent amount of time on the training ground with the players to work on it further.

Cauley Woodrow needs to be the main man up front for this upcoming game though.
