Adebayo starts: The early predicted Luton Town XI to face Birmingham on Saturday

After their play-off heartbreak last season, time to reflect on the campaign will surely have brought smiles to Luton Town faces.

What a campaign it was for the Hatters as Nathan Jones’ side overcame significant adversity to achieve a sixth place Championship finish and a place in the play-offs when nobody would have predicted them to do so.

In the end, Huddersfield Town proved an obstacle too many, but Luton should be going into the new season with plenty of optimism.

It’s Birmingham City up first at Kenilworth Road in what is a fantastic opportunity to kick-off the season with three points.

Here, we’ve taken an early look at the potential XI Nathan Jones could select for the tie.

With plenty of strong reinforcements this summer, this perhaps isn’t the easiest task, however, for the opener, we think Jones could stick with a familiar system.

In between the sticks in a 3-5-2, Ethan Horvath should get the nod as the club’s number one – a strong choice after he showed what he could do when stepping in for Brice Samba at Nottingham Forest last term.

In a back three, we’ve gone with the same three Jones deployed against West Ham in the club’s final pre-season match – Reece Burke, Gabe Osho and Sonny Bradley.

Amari’i Bell could potentially come in and force Gabe Osho to miss out, though, slotting in at LCB, with Bradley shuffling across to become the central defender.

At wing-back, after a strong season last term, James Bree once again features on the right, meanwhile, Alfie Doughty could feature down the left-hand side after his summer arrival at Kenilworth Road.

Quiz: Can you remember the score the last time Luton Town played at these 26 stadiums?

Stamford Bridge?

Allan Campbell could anchor a three-man midfield in the tie, with Jordan Clark and Luke Berry playing slightly ahead in the centre of the park. There is scope for new signing Cauley Woodrow to come into the midfield in a slight re-shape, though.

Up front, Elijah Adebayo starts with the forward one of, if not the first name on the team sheet.

Alongside him, we’ve gone for Carlton Morris, however, Harry Cornick could just as well be the partner Jones chooses for Adebayo on Saturday.

All in all, a strong line-up for the Hatters, and one they will hope gets them all three points on the opening weekend.
