Adebayo Akinfenwa scored his 50th goal for Wycombe Wanderers as the Chairboys defeated Tranmere Rovers 2-0 at Prenton Park yesterday afternoon to go top of the League One table.
In what was the second meeting between the sides in eight days, Akinfenwa – also known as ‘The Beast’ – opened the scoring for the Chairboys in the 43rd minute, as he was left unmarked to head in a well delivered Joe Jacobson free-kick.
Left-back Jacobson then sealed the points for the Buckinghamshire side three minutes later, slotting in a penalty in first half stoppage time, on what was his 33rd birthday as well as his 500th career appearance.
Is Akinfenwa a Wycombe legend?
Akinfenwa’s strike takes his tally in the league to six this season, and is now the first player to score 50 times under Gareth Ainsworth.
Wycombe are now nine games unbeaten in the league, taking 36 points from 17 games, three clear of 2nd placed Ipswich.
Here is what the Wycombe striker had to say on Instagram after the win for his side:
What the accolade shows is that Akinfenwa’s decision to move to Wycombe in 2016 has been vindicated. He has been excellent for Gareth Ainsworth’s side in attack with his hold-up play and heading ability in the four seasons he has been at the Buckinghamshire club.
If the Chairboys’ promotion push is to continue this term, Akinfenwa will have to carry on delivering for his side, as he has been integral to the team on and off the pitch.
