Sheffield Wednesday fans will feel that next season is their year, having suffered the ignominy of play-off heartbreak in each of the past two seasons.

The Owls have come exceptionally close to a Premier League return for several years now, and boss Carlos Carvalhal is extremely close to assembling a squad capable of finally getting the south Yorkshire side over the line.

The Portuguese manager is blessed with an abundance of talent in each position, and the addition of winger George Boyd on a free transfer from Burnley has only added to the depth and quality on display at Hillsborough.

One position in which the club may need to strengthen is between the sticks, with current number one Keiren Westwood being linked with a move away from the club in recent weeks.

If the experienced Irish shot stopper decides to move on, then Carvalhal will need a replacement, and should consider a permanent swoop for Liverpool goalkeeper Danny Ward.

Ward spent last season on loan at play off winners Huddersfield, and was extremely impressive in the Terriers phenomenal, unexpected rise to the Premier League.

Boss David Wagner failed to tie up a permanent deal for the 24-year-old, and turned his attentions elsewhere, but with both Lorius Karius and Simon Mignolet both ahead of the stopper at parent club Liverpool, Ward may seek a move to continue his development with first team football.

Wednesday will have money to spend this summer, and with only small tweaks needed to turn the club into top two contenders, splashing out on a quality goalkeeper could be enough to see the Owls finally return to the top flight.
