Acun Ilicali has admitted that he expects Hull City to be challenging for promotion to the Premier League next year.

The Turkish businessman recently finalised an agreement with the Allam family to purchase the club and the deal is now being checked by the Football League.

As per a recent report from the Hull Daily Mail, it is understood that Ilicali could be formally appointed as the club's new owner before their clash with Stoke City this weekend.

After sealing an immediate return to the Championship last year, the Tigers would have been hoping to make a bright start to the 2021/22 season.

However, despite showing glimpses of promise at this level, a lack of consistency has hindered Hull's progress as they are currently 19th in the second-tier standings.

When you consider that the Tigers are only four points above the relegation zone, they will need to pick up some positive results in the coming weeks in order to alleviate fears of being dragged into a battle for survival.

Making reference to his plans for Hull, Ilicali has insisted that he is hoping to put the club in a position to challenge for a return to the top-flight in the not too distant future.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Ilicali said: "I am most happy when I entertain people so Hull is my new target to entertain these beautiful people.

"I wouldn't say that it will happen in one year, but our full concentration will be the Premier League starting from next year.

"That is the first target, but, trust me, if we can go to the Premier League, we will not be one of the favourites to be relegated.

"Our aim will be to push the top six teams."

The Verdict

Ilicali clearly has lofty ambitions for the future of the club and thus Hull's supporters will have every right to feel excited as their side enter a new dawn.

In order to have the best chance of securing a place in the Premier League in the future, the Tigers will need to nail their transfer recruitment by signing players who are capable of setting the Championship alight.

Hull will also need to convince Keane Lewis-Potter and Jacob Greaves to stay at the club as this particular duo have benefitted from the guidance of Grant McCann this season.

Whilst Greaves is currently averaging a respectable WhoScored match rating of 6.75 in the Championship whilst Lewis-Potter has provided an impressive total of nine direct goal contributions at this level for the Tigers.
