Lincoln City made an announcement that fans had been eagerly anticipating on August 2nd this year.
After hunting a number nine all summer, then-manager Danny Cowley finally bagged his man, pipping Coventry City to the signature of Nottingham Forest striker Tyler Walker.
Walker had a sensational impact at Mansfield Town, firing them to fourth place in League One and keeping them on the tails of the Imps in the title race all season. Their failure to go up left him looking to a level higher for his football, with Cowley eager to ensure he plied his trade with the Imps.
The move was met with widespread acclaim by Lincoln fans. Their main striker, John Akinde, had divided opinion and whilst his strengths lay in his physicality and robust nature, Walker offered a different prospect. He was quicker, more alert to space and had scored many more goals from open play.
Imps’ fans clearly felt this was the signing of the summer, the one player who could finally bring something the side had lacked; a prolific goalscorer. In all three of Cowley’s successful seasons, no player had registered 20 goals. Fans felt that adding that to the side would establish them in League One.
They were spot on. Even at this early stage walker’s contribution has been telling. Just this weekend his alert nature turned an average cross into a goal when he nipped ahead of Jon McLaughlin against Sunderland, then he converted a special delivery with aplomb to secure the game. He’s bagged seven for the Imps and is their leading scorer, well on course for the magical 20-a-season which fans set as a benchmark.
That initial excitement and anticipation at capturing the Forest man was certainly well-founded.
Always loved the guy, never slagged him off once. I promise.
