Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk has claimed he was delighted by the fight his side showed against a very good side in their defeat to Brentford last night, which has drawn an interesting reaction from fans of the Yorkshire club.
The Bees beat Wednesday 2-1 at Hillsborough last night, with Ivan Toney scoring his third-consecutive brace in the Championship.
Monk’s men remain bottom of the table after beginning the campaign with a 12-point deduction but, speaking to the club media after the defeat to Brentford, the Wednesday boss suggested he was happy with the fight shown by his players.
He said: “We played against a very good side, we knew that before the game.
“Overall, we were obviously very disappointed to lose the game. I think first half we were just a little bit below the level of performance that we have been delivering.”
He added: “We lacked that little bit of composure tonight when we did turn over the ball and get it up to players to make it difficult for them, although they defended very well and made it very difficult for us to find those passes through or those deliveries from wide.
“We kept going and we kept pushing, that’s the good thing about it but we didn’t hit the overall level of performance that we have been doing in all the games so far. Especially in that first half.
“I’m delighted at the fight and attitude we have in us. The spirit is clear.”
When pressed on the absence of fans, Monk said: “It’s the be all and end all of football isn’t it. The games themselves they’re played at a good level of tempo but it’s not real football.”
Monk’s focus will now shift to the trip to Saturday when Wednesday play host to 12th-place Luton Town.

Every game is must win when you start on -12 but we’re never getting through a season without some defeats. Brentford look a decent team and will be up there this season but those two goals were avoidable. Luton, Wycombe, Rovrum. Gotta be looking to get 9 points from those 3.
