Plenty of Ipswich Town fans have taken to social media to discuss whether the club should offer Tommy Smith a contract.

The 29-year-old defender - who came through the academy at Ipswich and made almost 250 appearances for the Tractor Boys - has spent the past few weeks training with the Blues' under-23s following the end of his contract at MLS side Colorado Rapids.

The centre-back is currently searching for a new club and admitted fairly recently that he would be open to returning to Ipswich in the future - although he also said at the time that he wasn't sure if it would be possible.

However, Ipswich manager Paul Lambert recently said that Smith was training at the club to keep his fitness and appeared to rule out the possibility of Town offering him a contract.

Smith was a fans' favourite throughout his time at Portman Road and plenty of Town supporters have taken to social media to discuss whether the club should offer the defender a new deal.

An Ipswich fan posted on Facebook: "Think Lambert should give Tommy Smith a contract, could do worse."

Plenty of Ipswich supporters were quick to comment on the post and give their thoughts, here is a look at some of the best responses...

Peter Cox: Absolutely, no brainer!

Richard Moss: We have 4 centre backs already!!!!

Leonie Read: I disagree, our defence is fine most of the time. We need to focus on attacking!!

James Spink: C'mon Town fans, Tommy Smith was never a very good centre-half and never really a regular. We loved him because he was one of our own and still do tbh, but he’s just been released by Colorado (who are they?!) at the age of 29!!! That alone should set the alarm bells ringing..... give him a contract? No thanks!

Carl Brame: Yes he's one our own, yes he loves the club but he is not good enough, he doesn't read the game. No pace, so for me it's a definite no. Move on.

William Taylor: I agree. Whilst I’m not unhappy with our defence, he would instantly be our best CB if he signed (perhaps with the exception of Woolfenden).

Gavin Mann: Got to be worth a contract until the end of the season, with an option of another year.

Would be a decent Div 1 defender, plus more of a goal threat from corners than our current defenders.

Tel Cornwell: I'd certainly agree to a short contract... He's a proven championship CB and VERY good in the air... Can't see it happening though.

Matt Burrows: We have one of the best defensive records in the league so why change it? It's up top we need more firepower.

Damon Harris: Too slow for our back line now.

Billy Carter: No way.
