Stoke City manager Nathan Jones will be putting together the final elements of his first team squad as he looks for a top-six finish in the Championship next season, but record signing Giannelli Imbula does not look like he is in Jones' plans, according to report in the Stoke Sentinel.

Imbula, 26, arrived at the bet365 Stadium in February 2016 for a club record fee of £18.3million, but having failed to make an impact, the midfielder spent the last two seasons on loan at Toulouse and Rayo Vallecano.

So are Stoke right to try and sell Imbula amid reports of talks with Club Brugge?

We discuss.........

Ned Holmes

“Ultimately, this seems like the right move for Stoke but I would have liked to see him stay.

“I think he’s a player with real quality and I would have been intrigued to see him used as part of the midfield diamond in Nathan Jones signature formation.

“However, he’s spent the past two seasons out on loan, which indicates he was always likely to move on this summer.

“Stoke need to wrap this move up so they can use the money, and space in the budget, to improve their squad further before the transfer window closes.”

Kealan Hughes

“This is definitely the right move for Stoke to make. Imbula hasn’t been part of plans for some time now and it is clear he doesn’t want to be at the club, so it’s best for both parties that he moves on.

“He never adjusted to English football despite promising so much, and once Stoke were relegated from the Premier League he was never going to stick around in the Championship.

“It is likely he is being paid a fair amount too, so it will be a relief to get him off the wage bill. Nathan Jones should be given that money to strengthen the squad by signing players determined to take Stoke back to the top level.

“It is a shame that the deal didn’t work out for Stoke. He was a player with a lot of potential and could have been very effective for the team, even in the Championship. However the club is going down the right route in getting rid and bringing in players with Championship experience.”

Louie Chandler

"Absolutely it is the right move.

"The fact they look set to get around £5million for him is a bonus. He simply had to be shifted from the club's wage bill with FFP set to be enforced more strictly than ever this season.

"I have been very impressed with Nathan Jones and Stoke this season, primarily with the way he has streamlined his squad and recruited smartly - this is just another example of that.

"If they can hit the ground running and play as well as Luton did under him then they will be seriously challengers next season."
