Swansea City boss Steve Cooper has revealed that centre-back Mike van der Hoorn looks set to miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery on his knee injury.

Van der Hoorn has not featured for the Swans since being forced off during his side's 1-0 win over Charlton back in early January, and it now appears as though this outing might have been the Dutchman's final appearance for the club this campaign.

It emerged that the 27-year-old visited a specialist on Tuesday to gain further details on the injury that has kept him out of Swansea's last nine matches, but a scan revealed that Van der Hoorn required season-ending surgery in order to fix the problem.

Van der Hoorn has been a key figure for Swansea having made 24 league appearances during their promotion push this campaign, but the defender may now have played his final game for the club with his contract set to expire over the summer.

Speaking to the club website, Cooper provided further detail on Van der Hoorn's current situation following his unexpected surgery, and the Swansea boss suggested there is only a slim chance that he will feature for the Welsh side again this term.

“He (Van der Hoorn) had a check-up scan yesterday but it showed the knee had not recovered as we thought it would and should," Cooper said.

“He has had surgery straight away, which pretty much rules him out for the season.

“He might make the last game of the season and – Mike being Mike – he is thinking that way."
