Sheffield Wednesday announced the capture of well-travelled winger George Boyd on July 3rd, 2017.

It seemed to be quite a signing at the time. Boyd had been plying his trade in the Premier League with Burnley, but also had a spell in the top flight with Hull City.

With his trademark flowing locks, he'd become an instantly recognisable figure in the English game, possessing skill and flair in the wide positions with a penchant for the odd goal too.

It certainly seemed like a good signing and Sheffield Wednesday fans were delighted. They'd just missed out on a place in the Premier League a few months earlier, losing out in the play-off semi-finals to Huddersfield.

Boyd was seen as a key component in them reaching the next level, so excitement was high when he finally pulled on the blue and white of the Owls.

It need not have been. He made just 20 outings as they struggled to a mid table finish, often seen at left wing back rather than on the flank. This season it hasn't got any better for him and he's surely surplus to requirements under Steve Bruce.

Still, optimism was high in July 2017, as you can see below.
