A number of Birmingham City supporters have been left frustrated by the latest admission by chief executive Xuandong Ren that Blues have been outsourcing their scouting after furloughing the club’s own recruitment experts.
Birmingham have been heavily active in the last two transfer windows since Aitor Karanka took over as manager. The likes of George Friend, Adam Clayton, Neil Etheridge, Ivan Sanchez, Scott Hogan and Mikel San Jose amongst the group of players to arrive through the door over the summer. Since then Alen Halilović, Leonardo Dos Reis, Sam Cosgrove, Yan Valery, Rekeem Harper and Keyendrah Simmonds have also arrived.
Those signings have not been able to help Blues climb up the Championship table this season, in fact their form has gone in the opposite direction. Karanka’s side find themselves inside the Championship’s bottom three after a run of just one win in their last 11 league matches. Although Ren has offered his full backing to the Spaniard.
The January additions have not had much time to bed in as of yet, so there is still plenty of time for those signings to pay off. However, there will be some concern that some of the players who joined earlier in the campaign have not been able to have as much of an impact as would have been hoped for.
Speaking to BBC WM, Ren outlined that the Blues have been outsourcing their scouting with one company being used from Spain and one from France. Although he also insisted that the final say on deals is with Karanka.
He said: “We have two scouting companies who are analysing the big data, one in Spain, one in France and they talk to the management team on a regular basis. Probably even more in a transfer market.”
Many Birmingham fans were left aggravated by these comments and believe that this approach has led to some of the signings in previous windows not working out. Here we take a look at some of the best reactions on social media…

That right there is the problem. Absolutely clueless 👎

The track record of the third rate Spanish signings and the "possession football" he sacked Monk for speak for themselves; yet he still continues to outsource recruitment to Spain. 23rd in league is the result of his fruits

This is bonkers. We send them a list of what we need, they send us a list of names and a bill?

And that’s why we’re 2nd from bottom

Absolute joke of a club

You have out sourced the scouting department that shows you know nothing about football, footballers . Good scouts look locally and further afield why do we need Spanish second rate players or from other European countries . No wonder we are in a mess with this man in charge
