Sunderland CEO Jim Rodwell has revealed that a recent meeting with supporters' groups was postponed as a potential takeover is at a sensitive stage, which has drawn an interesting reaction from fans of the North East club.

Rodwell was scheduled to meet with Black Cats supporters' groups this week to discuss a range of issues, including the proposed takeover of the club, but it was announced yesterday that had been postponed with the CEO's explanation hinting that something could be close.

After pressure from supporters, owner Stewart Donald announced back in December that he would be selling the club but despite various reports and rumours nothing significant has yet materialised.

In the statement on the club website that announced the postponement, Rodwell noted: "After discussions with the relevant fan groups, we have taken the decision to postpone tomorrow’s supporter collective meeting.

“The club remains in a period of exclusivity with a preferred buyer and due to the advancement and sensitivity of this process, it would be inappropriate to comment publicly at this time.

“I would like to thank our supporters’ groups, and the wider fan base, for their continued patience and understanding throughout this period.”

Donald's ownership of the club has not been a particularly successful one for the Stadium of Light faithful.

The Englishman bought Sunderland after their relegation to League One in April 2018 and under his stewardship, they have twice failed to secure promotion back to the Championship.
