Sheffield Wednesday caretaker boss Lee Bullen has revealed that Fernando Forestieri was left out of the squad for the defeat at Millwall yesterday for tactical reasons.

The classy forward has proven himself to be a key player for the Owls over the years but he has struggled to make an impact in the current campaign, coming on as a sub in the opening day win before remaining on the bench last week.

However, he couldn't even make the 18 at The Den, with Bullen confirming to the Sheffield Star that the forward's lack of physicality was an issue.

"Fernando picked up a knock on his thigh earlier in the week so didn't train until Friday but that wasn't the reason behind it.

"I knew Millwall would be a big physical test and that was the reason for maybe selecting Dom [Dominic Iorfa] to start ahead of Mo [Moses Odubajo] and obviously having big Atdhe [Atdhe Nuhiu] on the bench if we needed to chuck him on. Fernando will be in our thoughts for Tuesday night and we will see where we go from there."

The Yorkshire side are back in action when they host Luton in the week.

The Verdict

This was a bold move from Bullen and you'd have to say it's probably the wrong call and his justification for the decision doesn't make sense.

Forestieri has proven himself in this league over the years so the physicality isn't a problem for him.

Given the ability he has on the ball, not to have him as an option from the bench is ridiculous considering he has seven subs.

The reasoning for this decision will surely anger the Wednesday fans as the former Watford man could have made a real difference from the bench in a game they needed creativity as they failed to break down ten men.
