Aaron Ramsey has revealed that Michael Carrick was a big reason as to why he joined Middlesbrough on loan in January.

The Aston Villa youngster joined Boro on deadline day until the end of the season, citing that Carrick's reputation played a 'massive role' in his decision to move to the Riverside.

The former Manchester United coach had a decorated playing career, as well as an extensive coaching cv. That's been exemplified by Boro's impressive form under their new manager, winning 10 of his 14 games in charge so far.

That has propelled them into promotion contention, with Ramsey hoping to play a huge role in that.

However, his decision to join Boro was helped by his new manager, as he told club media: “He [Carrick] was a massive draw. He had a massive career and yet, when I spoke to him, the way he came across was very surprising.

"He was quite calm and I’m just really looking forward to working with him now."

Ramsey is joined at the Riverside by fellow Villa youngster Cameron Archer, who has quickly settled into life on Teeside after he joined earlier in January.

That will no doubt help Ramsey settle at the club quicker as he hopes to replicate the form he showed at Cheltenham Town last season to help Boro into the playoffs come May.

The 19-year-old made 14 appearances in the second half of last season and played a significant role in helping the Robins to a steady finish in League One.

The Verdict

Ramsey was a surprise arrival on deadline day, adding extra depth and quality in midfield.

Whilst it wasn't an area that needed significantly strengthening, Boro were limited in with options should the likes of Riley McGree pick up an injury for example.

Not only that, should Ramsey take his chance, having someone alongside him like Cameron Archer will help massively which could be the start of a productive partnership on the pitch.
