Fleetwood player Ellis Harrison has completed a deal to join Port Vale - and boss Darrell Clarke has told the club's official website that the player is 'a winner' and is a good player to have in the squad.

Harrison managed a total of six goals and two assists in 16 starts for the Cod Army during the 2021/22 campaign but then was more of a rotation option in the side last time around.

However, the club have now decided to sell him on to the Valiants, as they look to try and push on in League One this season.

After winning the League Two play-offs last season, the club will not want to be relegated straight back down to the fourth tier of English football. The side now have another option upfront who can help score them goals, with the player's record reading 166 games in League One and 35 goals with 12 assists.

For Fleetwood, the club managed to just about stay in the third tier themselves during the last campaign - but rather than keep Harrison, the side have instead decided to cash-in and are looking to other strikers.

The Harrison transfer sees the player join up with the Valiants for an undisclosed fee - and now boss Clarke is seemingly happy to land the player and have him as part of the strikeforce for the season. Now, they'll be hoping he can fire in the goals for the Valiants.

Speaking to the club's official website about the player - having managed him before at Bristol Rovers - the Port Vale manager said: "When I had him at Bristol Rovers, we ended up selling him for a large fee to Ipswich, so I know very well about all his strengths, his character, how he is around the dressing room and that he is a winner.

“He also brings with him that pedigree at the League One level, and I know he is coming in hungry and ready to give his all."

The Verdict

Port Vale signing Harrison is a good piece of business when you consider his League One record and the fact he has worked with Clarke in the past too.

The former Fleetwood player was solid enough at Highbury, so it is a surprise to see him sold on by Scott Brown. He scored goals in the league and to sell him to a divisional rival - where he could bag the goals for them now instead - is another surprising move by them.

However, the Cod Army selling Harrison is a boost for Vale. Now back in the third tier of English football, they will want to stay there and signing a player like the striker is a good move because he can pretty much guarantee some goals in the division.

If Darrell Clarke can get the best out of Harrison, then he could be a key player for them now this campaign.
