Ronnie Edwards emerged as a bright young talent with Peterborough United last season.

The 19-year old earned his breakthrough into becoming an important first team member for the Posh as they suffered relegation from the Championship.

His performances earned him the attention of the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur last summer, but no move ultimately materialised.

FLW’s Peterborough fan pundit Alex Batt believes a January move remains unlikely, with the League One side likely to hold a firm stance on their position regarding the talented youngster.

The club will be seeking to earn the maximum amount possible as a transfer sum in order to consider a potential sale.

This Peterborough supporter has claimed a summer move is much more likely, as he does not expect the club to budge on its stance regarding Edwards’ future.

“Ronnie Edwards is a weird one,” Batt told Football League World.

“His stock was so high in the summer, you would have thought from playing regularly in the Championship, albeit in a relegation team, he looked very comfortable most of the time.

“He then goes and wins a tournament with England.

“You have Chelsea, Palace, I think West Ham as well all linked with a move for him and nothing comes from it.

“We’re holding out for a lot of money for him, so not many people were willing to pay for that clearly.

“Will he go in January? I’m not sure. I don’t think so.

“Again, I think the club will want a lot of money for him, so if anything I think he’ll probably go in the summer.

“But still, yeah, I don’t see Peterborough budging on their transfer fee that they want for him.

“They’re very good at negotiating, especially for their star players so I don’t think anything will happen without Peterborough being fully happy in getting a lot of money for him so unless someone is ready to cough up a lot of money then I don’t think he’ll be going anywhere.”

Edwards has featured 13 times in the third tier so far this season, with Peterborough currently 4th in the League One table.

The defender also appeared 34 times in the Championship last season, emerging as an important squad member having graduated from the club’s academy.

Up next for the Posh is a trip to face Bristol Rovers on Saturday.

The Verdict

Edwards is clearly very talented, so Peterborough have every reason to expect a big transfer sum in order to agree to a sale.

Given no one came in for him in the previous summer, a January move seems unlikely.

But if he can continue to perform at a high level, and help the club achieve promotion, then a move in the summer could prove possible.

Staying with Peterborough may ultimately prove beneficial in the long-run as he is continuing to develop as a player by receiving a wealth of playing time under Grant McCann.
