Birmingham City really need to have a good January window or it could be a tough slog towards the end of the campaign this season.

The Blues started this season with real hope after a busy summer window under Harry Redknapp as plenty of players arrived.

However, they simply haven't gelled since and Redknapp duly lost his job for Steve Cotterill a few months ago.

There is evidently something wrong at the club at the moment, then, and they really do need to add to their squad where they can in January in order to avoid the drop.

Whether they can or not, though, remains to be seen but we have still looked to identify players that they should get after.

Here, then, are two deals they should look to seal as soon as the window opens...

 Matt Smith

Born in Birmingham, one of QPR's main goal-scorers and yet he doesn't play for the R's from the start more often than not.

Smith is a good player at this level and will always give it his all so why not try and sign him in January - even on loan?

He'd be the fighter up top that the Blues desperately need at the moment.

 Jan Kirchhoff

The big midfielder would be perfect for the Blues in their relegation fight.

Maikel Kieftenbeld's future looks up in the air and the Blues need to bring in players capable of putting in a physical challenge or two.

He's available on a free at the moment, as well, and so this could potentially be a very shrewd signing for the men from the West Midlands.
