After success under Carlos Carvalhal over the last two Sky Bet Championship campaigns, a lot was expected of Sheffield Wednesday this season, with the expectation that the Owls would at the very least be mounting a serious challenge on the top-six.

However, under Carvalhal, the Owls have made a sloppy start to the season, and heading into the New Year, are facing a mammoth task to turn their campaign around and climb back towards the play-offs.

Plenty of Sheffield Wednesday’s squad have let their manager down over the first-half of the season, and the likelihood is, there will be additions made to the Hillsborough playing squad in the New Year.

Of course, like with many other clubs, there will be expected departures over the course of the transfer window, as Wednesday look to clear some deadwood out of Hillsborough.

With that in mind, here is a look at TWO players Wednesday should consider axing in early 2018…

Atdhe Nuhiu

Although Nuhiu is edging his way into first-team plans at Hillsborough, there is obvious doubt surrounding the striker’s ability, with Carvalhal never fully trusting the 28-year-old.

Nuhiu’s contract is set to expire in the summer, and with no indication of an extension, Wednesday could look to move the striker on to free up some space in their squad.

The striker has done his reputation no harm this season, with his impact often impressive, however, he doesn’t seem to fit what Wednesday are looking for.

Ross Wallace

Wallace has been good for Sheffield Wednesday over the last two years, but this season has been extremely disappointing, with the winger failing to find his best and often receiving criticism from the Hillsborough support.

Wednesday could look to cash-in on the 32-year-old and bring a slightly younger player in to replace Wallace in the New Year.

Whilst Wallace’s departure would be high-profile, it would be one that the club’s supporters were understanding of.
