Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray has strengthened his squad with the signing of midfielder Bradley Johnson on a free transfer from Championship rivals Derby County, it has been confirmed on the club website.

The 32-year-old former Norwich and Leeds player moves to Ewood Park on a two-year deal.

So, will Johnson prove to be a good addition at Ewood Park?

We discuss........

Ned Holmes

"This seems like a sensible signing from Mowbray and one that is on brand with some of the other business he has done this summer.

"Johnson joins after the signing of Downing, so it seems that the Blackburn boss is looking to add some experience to his squad.

"The midfielder has 211 Championship appearances, adding a useful 38 goals in that time, and made a useful contribution at top six Derby County last season, so he should add something to Mowbray’s squad.

"At 32, there is likely still a fair bit left in Johnson’s legs and on a free transfer, this looks like great value."

Louie Chandler

"It could be a smart signing if the deal has been well negotiated.

"An experienced central-midfielder can be a very useful weapon at Championship level and especially for a club like Blackburn who are looking to climb the league once again.

"Cory Evans was the only Rovers central-midfielder with much in the way of Championship experience so the arrival of Johnson could be one that is needed.

"Blackburn are not a club flushed with cash and I just hope they haven't paid over the odds in terms of transfer fees and wages. But a two-year deal seems smart and, on the whole, I think it will prove a smart signing."

Kealan Hughes

"This is a very good signing for Rovers and he has the ability to completely change their midfield and their style of football.

“Blackburn have needed a midfielder who is as good with the ball at his feet as he is at organising, and Johnson fits the bill

“He will add experience and that bite in the tackle, allowing him to win the ball back for his side. He can also act as a focal point and he would be the player others look to.

“In a role sitting just in front of the defence he’d be able to play passes around the pitch, and could be a great platform for the likes of Bradley Dack and Adam Armstrong to work off.”
