Stoke City are lining a move for Huddersfield Town captain Tommy Smith, The Sun journalist Phil Cadden has reported.

Smith, who has spent his entire first team career at Huddersfield, was named as the club's captain following their promotion to the Premier League in the summer of 2017, and has made exactly 200 appearances in all competitions for The Terriers, scoring five goals.

It is thought that it would cost The Potters somewhere in the region of £2.5million to bring the former Manchester City youth player to the bet365 Stadium, as they look to build on a disappointing first campaign back in the Championship last season.

With just 12 months remaining on Smith's contract at The John Smith's Stadium, this could prove to be Huddersfield's last chance to cash in on the 27-year-old.

So would Smith be a good signing for Stoke?

We put that question to some of our Football League World writers.

Chris Gallagher

"A very good signing.

"Bringing in a right-back has to be a priority for Nathan Jones in the coming months and Smith would be a reliable option.

"He has shown over the years he is a good player at this level and he is a real leader too which is a bonus.

"The supposed fee of £2.5m isn't much at all in today's market so this would be a smart signing by the Potters, strengthening a weakness in the team."

Toby Wilding

"I think this could be a good signing for Stoke.

"At 27-years-old, Smith is approaching the peak years of his career, but still has plenty of experience under his belt, and clearly knows how to get out of this division, having done so with an unfancied Huddersfield side just two years ago.

"A fee of £2.5million should also be easily affordable for Stoke, and as well as boosting their promotion chances, it would also hamper those of one of their potential rivals for a place in the Premier League.

"Smith would offer a reliable option to manager Nathan Jones next season, and completing the deal would add to what is already a hugely promising summer transfer window for The Potters."

Jacob Potter

"I think this would be a smart signing by the Potters if they can pull this off.

"Smith is a player that knows the Championship well, and knows how to get out of the division, having previously won promotion to the Premier League with Huddersfield.

"Stoke were poor last season, and a number of their players struggled to adapt to life in the Championship, but if they were to sign Smith, then they would be getting a player that is capable of playing his part in their promotion bid next season.

"He's exactly the type of player they should be looking at signing, and his experience at this level would certainly be beneficial to Nathan Jones' side."
