Aston Villa could make a move for Sheffield Wednesday's Matt Penney in the January window, with the left-back's contract up at the end of the season.

The 20-year-old has been one of many Owls academy lads to step up into the first-team and he has handled the transition very well.

Penney has made eight starts for Jos Luhukay's side this season and they are unbeaten in all those games.

Such form saw the Yorkshire outfit open talks about a new deal for the versatile left-sided player, with Luhukay recently revealing he was confident an agreement would be reached.

However, Football Insider are reporting that Villa, along with Premier League pair Brighton and Bournemouth, have been monitoring the youngster.

Dean Smith has just taken over at Villa Park and Neil Taylor is the only senior left-back so bringing in someone in that role is a priority in January.

But, would Penney be a good signing?

We take a look...

Jay Taylor

This would be a good signing for Villa.

With Dean Smith at the helm, he will look to reduce the average age of the Aston Villa squad, and signing that Penney will do that.

The Championship club are in need of defensive reinforcement and the Sheffield Wednesday man would fit the bill. He is a young player that Smith can mould heading into the future.

It would be a very astute signing.

Jacob Potter

It would be a smart bit of business for Villa.

Dean Smith has the ability to get the very best out of Penney in what has been the breakthrough season for the youngster.

If he is guaranteed first-team football then it would be an excellent move for Penney.

Louie Chandler

It would be a good signing.

Villa's defence has been close to shambolic at times this season so bringing in one of the country's brightest defensive prospects would be a great move.
