Now that promotion has been achieved to the Premier League and jubilant celebrations are beginning to subside, Aston Villa can focus on the transfer window.

Despite an impressive end to the season there is no doubt that Dean Smith will need to strengthen if they are to stay in the top flight, and another target emerged on Friday morning.

The Irish Independent reported on Thursday night that Villa were among three clubs vying to sign Bournemouth midfielder Harry Arter, with Fulham and Stoke also interested.

Arter spent the season on loan with Cardiff City as they were relegated to the Championship and is now keen to move away from the Vitality permanently.

But would he prove a good signing for Villa?

We discuss...

George Dagless

"It makes sense.

"Arter would bring Premier League knowledge and a bit of industry in midfield whilst he still has years ahead of him.

"Villa need to look at some fresh legs this summer with a few players getting on in years so this one could work."

Kealan Hughes

"Arter had a mixed season with Cardiff, but he has impressed in the top-tier before at Bournemouth. He is a battler in a similar fashion to John McGinn, and can be relied upon for his commitment.

"But Villa require quality in midfield if they are to survive and progress in the Premier League. Arter lacks the technical ability to be a key member of the Villa midfield and probably isn't an upgrade on either McGinn or Hourihane.

"He would be a useful squad player but nothing more, Villa should set their sights elsewhere."

Louie Chandler

"For the right price, it would be a smart move.

"Arter had an ok time with Cardiff last season but would bring some much-needed Premier League experience to Aston Villa's side.

"But he is not someone who they should break the bank over. If they cannot get him for their preferred price, then move on."
