Portsmouth are in the driving seat in the race to secure Ryan Yates’ signature in the New Year, with the League One club looking to take the Nottingham Forest midfielder on loan this winter.

According to the Mirror’s live transfer blog (19/12, 11:51) Kenny Jackett’s promotion-chasing side will bring the 21-year-old in on loan, with a view to making a deal permanent if Championship football is secured in 2019.

Yates has made just one appearance for Forest this season, but played regularly last season for Notts County and Scunthorpe, impressing in the lower leagues.

So, is this a good signing for Pompey?

We discuss…

Jay Taylor

Excellent addition for the League One side.

Yates’ move to Fratton Park will only strengthen their grip at the top of the league and add some real Championship quality to their side as they look to win promotion back to the second tier.

Kenny Jackett is making a typically shrewd signing here that I am sure is going to work.

George Harbey

Yates is a fantastic signing for Pompey.

For a player of his age, he has a very mature head, he’s a tough tackler and was influential for Notts County and Scunthorpe last season.

What a signing he is.

Alfie Burns

This could be an excellent addition.

What we saw from Yates in League One and Two last season was really encouraging and he will only add to a strong squad at Fratton Park.

Yates will be determined to prove himself too, which is great for Jackett.
