Portsmouth face a battle to keep hold of star man Jamal Lowe with the winger keen to leave the club this summer.
That’s according to Sky Sports, who claim that the 25-year-old has informed the League One side he wants to move on after two-and-a-half years at Fratton Park.
However, Pompey are sure to be reluctant to lose Lowe after he enjoyed an outstanding season for the club last time out, scoring 15 league goals from out wide to help the side to the play-offs.
Here we look at the situation for the former Hampton & Richmond player in our latest FLW Six Pointer…
Firstly, are there any clubs interested in Lowe?
“Yes, there’s a lot of Championship interest in the player which is why he will want to go.
“Sky had reported last month that Leeds, Cardiff and Wigan were all keen on Lowe, whilst Millwall has been suggested as another possible destination.
“So, he will have a lot of options if he is to move on.”
Is he ready for the step up to the Championship?
“You would have to say he is.
“Lowe was superb last season and as well as scoring a lot of goals he impressed with his overall play.
“He is direct, quick and given his age he still has his best years in front of him and now seems the perfect opportunity to further his career by playing at a higher level.”
Which one of the linked clubs would best suit the player?
“Leeds or Cardiff would be the standout options from Lowe’s perspective.
“They seem the best equipped to launch a promotion push and the winger will want to join a club that can be successful.
“As well as that, whilst Marcelo Bielsa and Neil Warnock are complete opposites in terms of their style of play, they both want a lot from their wingers and would seem like good fits for Lowe.”
How big a loss will he be to Portsmouth?
“He will be sorely missed.
“The 15 goals he scored for Kenny Jackett’s side made him their top scorer last season and he gave them a real outlet down the flanks with his pace.
“Therefore, he will be hard to replace for the recruitment team at Fratton Park.”
What sort of fee can they command for their star man?
“They must hope to get around £3-4m for Lowe.
“It had been reported that Millwall and Wigan saw £1.5m bids knocked back and you can understand why as he is worth more than that.
“The level of interest in the player could turn this into an auction and there’s no reason why they shouldn’t get at least £3m which would give Jackett a lot of funds to work with in the market following the sale of Matt Clarke as well.”
Finally, do you think he will leave this summer?
“Yes, a summer departure appears inevitable.
“We’ve seen over the years that clubs don’t tend to benefit from keeping a player that doesn’t want to be there. And, in fairness, you can understand why Lowe wants to move to the Championship.
“So, all Pompey can do is try to get the best fee possible and reinvest but they may try and wait as the interested parties will get more desperate as the window comes to an end.”
