Jermain Defoe is a man in high demand, with Charlton Athletic one of many clubs linked with a move for the 39-year old.

Sky Sports have reported that the former England international is being sought after by numerous League One clubs.

But, would he be a good signing for Charlton? And do they need him?

We quizzed our FLW writers…

Defoe heading to Charlton seems logical and would be a big and bold move by the club if they could pull it off.

The Addicks have been impressive since appointing Johnnie Jackson and Defoe could really give them that extra boost to kick on and potentially even land a play-off spot this season. He’s certainly still got the knack for goal-scoring.

He could arguably play a lot higher up the pyramid, so a move to League One could be shrewd by them. He’d no doubt still score for them and would play plenty of games to boot.

Another promotion season with Charlton would put him in line to arguably be one of the best English strikers over the last few decades.

This really would be a strange one.

In Chuks Aneke, Jayden Stockley, Conor Washington, Mason Burstow, Josh Davison and even Jonathan Leko, Charlton have ample striking options and talent to see out the rest of their incredibly underwhelming 2021/22 season.

With so little to play for, if they can deter any chances of slipping into a relegation battle, it would make zero sense to take minutes away from the likes of Burstow, and others players who are in the longer term plans of the club, to give them to a 39-year-old who has not proven he can handle regular game time in recent years.

In mainly a coaching role it could be a good signing, not on the pitch.

I find it very hard to see a 40-year-old Defoe scoring the goals to get Charlton where they want to be next season.

It does appear that a striker is wanted and perhaps needed at the Valley this season, and whilst casting their eyes at a 39-year-old would not normally generate excitement, they are not normally Jermain Defoe.

Defoe's knack for scoring goals has not escaped him in the latter stages of his career, proving to still operate efficiently with the Scottish champions.

Not only would he bring clinical finishing to The Valley, he also still has the technical ability and intelligence to match.

He would also be an excellent influence on the younger players in the squad, adding experience and leadership too.

There are a lot worse options out there for the Addicks.
