Millwall are closing in on a move for Ipswich Town goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski, according to the East Anglian Daily Times.

The Lions have reportedly agreed a fee with Ipswich for the Poland international's services, and the deal is set to be completed once terms have been agreed and a medical completed.

Bialkowski made 28 appearances for Ipswich last season, but he couldn't prevent the Tractor Boys from finishing bottom of the Championship and dropping into League One.

The 31-year-old has been at Portman Road for five seasons now and he signed a fresh three-year deal last summer, but he now looks set to depart the club in order to remain at Championship level.

In today's FLW Six Pointer, we take a closer look at the move...

Firstly, how has Bialkowski's career gone to date?

"The 31-year-old started his career in his native Poland before making the switch to Southampton in his late teenage years. He spent six years at St Mary's, but he largely played second fiddle to Kelvin Davis and made just 42 appearances during that time.

"He was sent out on loan spells to both Ipswich and Barnsley in 2009, but he failed to establish himself at either. Eventually, he made the move to Notts County in 2012 in order to get first-team football at an important time in his career.

"He impressed during his two seasons at County, and he then switched to Ipswich where he has played since. Bialkowski quickly established himself as the club's number one, and he largely retained that title throughout his time at the club."

Why are Millwall showing an interest in him?

"Millwall are currently without a senior goalkeeper after David Martin, Jordan Archer and Ben Amos all left the club after the end of the season. This means they are in desperate need of an experienced player between the sticks with pre-season looming.

"Bialkowski has picked up heaps of experience in the Championship during his time at Ipswich, so he would have been an obvious candidate of interest to Millwall as they sought to fill the club's goalkeeping void.

"He had his problems last term, but he has now spent many years as a first-choice goalkeeper. He is also at a good age for a 'keeper, in that he still has a number of years left in him at a good level."

What qualities can he bring to the Lions?

"Aside from his obvious experience, Bialkowski has developed his reputation as a solid all-round goalkeeper during his time in the south-east. He also comes with high calibre, having represented the Poland national team in 2018.

"He is best known for being an excellent shot stopper and has singlehandedly kept Ipswich in matches with great regularity in previous seasons.

"The 31-year-old may have seen his confidence somewhat knocked following Ipswich's relegation, but he will be looking to fix this in making the move to Millwall. It is a season which concludes with the European Championships, and he will want to rebuild his confidence in order to give himself a chance of getting included in the Poland squad."

Will he start for Neil Harris' side?

"It currently seems as though Bialkowski is nailed on to be Millwall's number one for the season opener, given that he has very little competition at present.

"It is likely that the Lions will recruit another stopper to challenge Bialkowski for the starting spot, as it would be considered too risky for the club to have academy goalkeepers as back-up.

"Additionally, it should be noted that Bialkowski was dropped twice by Ipswich last season due to his poor form, while his distribution has always been a concern. Millwall should start with him between the sticks, but they also need a strong second option."

Will Ipswich struggle without him?

"The Tractor Boys would have been expecting to lose Bialkowski this summer following their relegation, especially given his reputation in the Championship.

"The club will now need to recruit another goalkeeper to compete with new signing Tomas Holy for the starting spot, as experienced goalkeeper Dean Gerken has also left Portman Road this summer.

"Ipswich are reportedly looking at Remi Matthews of Bolton to challenge Holy for the starting spot, which suggests that the club does have a contingency plan in place for Bialkowski's imminent exit."

Finally, do you think this will be a successful move for both parties?

"I can see why Millwall have gone for Bialkowski as he looks to be a solid option between the sticks, but I don't think this move is a guaranteed success.

"Bialkowski is joining the Lions on the back of his weakest season in an Ipswich shirt, but much of that could be due to the fact he was playing at the back of a very poor side.

"It is a concerning that he is the only senior goalkeeper at Millwall currently, as this leaves Harris with no choice but to stick with him if his form drops off. I think the Lions should definitely be looking at another senior goalkeeping option as well."
