Reading FC have recently completed the signing of former Birmingham defender, Michael Morrison ahead of the new Championship season.

Morrison was out of contract at the end of last term, and opted to leave the Blues after a five-year-spell at St Andrew's, in favour of a move to the Berkshire-based club.

In our latest FLW Six Pointer, we look into Reading's latest signing in more detail.

Firstly, how good was Morrison for Birmingham last season?

"Morrison captained Birmingham last season, and made 43 league starts for the Blues as they finished 17th in the Championship.

"He's been key to their impressive performances of late, and it certainly will have come as a surprise to Birmingham supporters to see him move on.

"Morrison evidently wanted a new challenge, and Reading will be hoping that he can adjust to life at the Madejski Stadium as quickly as possible."

Is this is smart bit of business by the Royals?

"It's a smart signing by Reading, and it could prove to be one of their signings of the season.

"I was surprised to see Morrison leave Birmingham when his contract expired at the end of last year's campaign, and Reading have done extremely well to land his signature.

"The Royals look like they're going to be set for another season battling against relegation, and so it's somewhat of a coup for them to sign a player of Morrison's quality."

Will he be a regular starter in the Reading defence?

"I think he's a certain starter in Jose Gomes' squad.

"Reading lacked depth and experience in defence before Morrison arrived, so it's a signing that was desperately needed before the new season started.

"Gomes doesn't have many other options in the centre of defence, so I'd be surprised if he wasn't to start alongside Liam Moore for the Royals in their opening game of their league campaign against Sheffield Wednesday."

Is it a surprise to see Reading land his signature?

"It certainly will have come as a surprise to most supporters.

"There weren't any previous links to a potential deal for Morrison to arrive at the club, but looking at it now, it's a smart signing by the Royals.

"Morrison knows the league well, and it's a risk-free move in signing him, as no fee was required to strike a deal with the experienced centre-back."

What will he bring to Jose Gomes' squad next season?

"He'll bring leadership, experience and strong ability in the air.

"Morrison isn't the quickest on the ball, but he makes up for that with his off-the-ball qualities that he will bring to the Reading team next season.

"Young defenders like Gabriel Osho and Tom McIntyre will learn a considerable amount from Morrison, who knows how to perform to a high standard in the Championship."

How should Reading fans feel about this deal?

"They should be content with this latest signing.

"Morrison is vastly experienced at this level, and I think he'll fit in perfectly to the way that Jose Gomes wants his side to play in the future.

"It's not the most inspiring of signings, but he's proven in the Championship, and could strike up a strong partnership in the centre of defence alongside Liam Moore."
