‘A signing that I would be keen to get wrapped up’ – Stoke City plot transfer move for 22-year-old: The verdict

This article is part of Football League World’s ‘The Verdict’ series, which provides personal opinions from the FLW writers regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Stoke City are plotting a move for Motherwell’s Allan Campbell, according to The Scottish Sun.

The 22-year-old midfielder looks set to be on the move with his contract at the club set to expire at the end of the Scottish Premiership season.

It’s claimed that a number of English clubs and Scottish side Hibernian are keen on a move for the player, with Michael O’Neill thought to be a long-term admirer of the player.

With a role in central midfield to fill, it seems that Stoke may have found their ideal target.

So would Allan Campbell be a good signing for the Potters?

The team at FLW have their say…

Jordan Rushworth

This seems like the right profile of player that Stoke should be looking to target this summer and it is a signing that could well have the potential to prove to be something of a bargain if he comes in and performs well at the Bet365 Stadium.

Campbell is a player that has enjoyed a number of promising seasons with Motherwell now in Scotland and he has shown a lot of consistency for someone who is only 22-years-old. The midfielder can score goals and create from the middle of the park. He is also solid in possession and has put up decent defensive numbers this term with 1.8 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per game.

Stoke will be needing to add to their midfield options this summer, especially if recent reports that they could lose Joe Allen prove to be accurate. Campbell is someone that Michael O’Neill could look to develop over the coming years and have him as more of a box-to-box player within his setup.

This is a signing that I would be keen to get wrapped up swiftly if I were in Stoke’s shoes because there are sure to be other clubs interested in him.

Are these 17 facts about Stoke City's club badge true or false?

He could be a good signing.

Stoke are obviously looking to perhaps spend a bit more wisely this summer than they have in previous windows and I think looking at players like Campbell makes sense.

He’s a player that is available on a free with Motherwell resigned to losing him this summer as his contract runs down and it looks as though the Championship is his next destination.

Michael O’Neill has a real appreciation for players north of the border and will know whether Campbell can hack it so I would say trust the manager here.

He has years ahead of him to improve and on a free could be absolutely worth a punt.

Toby Wilding

I could see this being a good signing for Stoke if they can get it done.

Given it has been reported that the likes of Joe Allen and Sam Clucas could both be allowed to leave the club this summer, it does seem as though the Potters are going to need to add to their midfield ranks this summer.

At the age of just 22, Campbell is someone who could help to fill that role for many years to come, but it is also not like he is inexperienced either, given he already has over 150 career appearances to his name, meaning he should be ready for the pressure and expectation of Championship football.

With his contract expiring this summer, it also appears as though he will be available for free in the coming weeks, which will be helpful for interested clubs in the current financial climate, meaning this does look as though it could be worth looking into for those in charge at The Bet365 Stadium.
