Following their promotion from the Championship via the play-offs at the end of the season, it seems Aston Villa are wasting no time in building a squad ready to take on the top tier next season.

Villa have already completed several signings, and are being linked with a number of other players.

According to The Daily Mail, Huddersfield defender Terence Kongolo is a target for Villa ahead of their return to the top flight.

This is an interesting link given the situation of the two clubs involved, so we've taken a more in depth look at it here in our latest Six Point Opinion piece.

Firstly, what's Kogolo's situation at Huddersfield?

"Having joined The Terriers from French side Monaco, initially on loan in January 2018, Kongolo has made a total of 49 appearances in all competitions for Huddersfield since that move.

"Kongolo has three more years remaining on his contract at The John Smith's Stadium, meaning Huddersfield are not currently under any major pressure to sell the 25-year-old for the sake of a fee."

So how much would it cost to sign Kongolo?

"Having signed Kongolo for what was reported by the BBC to be a club record fee - surpassing £11.44million paid for Steve Mounie in 2017 - Huddersfield will likely want to get a make a good chunk of that fee back on the defender in order to make selling him worth their while.

"That therefore means that any fee should be some way over the £10million mark, and it will be interesting to see if that hinders any of the parties interested in a move for the defender."

Is that a fair price?

"It probably is.

"Kongolo was one of The Terriers' better performers in an otherwise dismal campaign last season, suggesting that he could have a part to play in a more solid Premier League side.

"That however is not something that comes cheaply these days, and as has already been mentioned, The Terriers have no need to charge a 'fair price' for a player who is currently tied to the club for some time yet such as a Kongolo."

Are Villa the only side interested?

"No.

"According to The Daily Mail, Watford are also interested in the Dutch international.

"Like Villa, it was a successful season for the Hornets, who finished safely in mid table in the Premier League while also reaching the FA Cup final, meaning Kongolo could have a big decision to make in the coming weeks."

Would Kongolo be interested in a move to one of those two sides?

"You would have thought so.

"Before his time at Monaco and Huddersfield, Kongolo came through the ranks at Dutch giants Feyenoord, so he is a player with plenty of top flight pedigree.

"He may feel that his performances have done enough to justify him remaining in the top flight next season, and with these two sides having just enjoyed promising campaigns, they could both be attractive propositions for Kongolo."

How would his departure affect Huddersfield?

"It would be a significant loss.

"Huddersfield have already seen a number of defenders leave the club since the end of the season, so losing one such as Kongolo would see them short on both numbers and ability in that position.

"The Terriers will therefore want to make sure they receive a decent fee for Kongolo if he does move on, in order to bring in some fresh defensive reinforcements ahead of their return to the Championship next season."
