When you consider that the Owls have made an incredibly strong start to their transfer business this summer, they ought to be already considered as legitimate contenders for automatic promotion ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Having recently secured the services of Ben Heneghan, David Stockdale and Will Vaulks, Wednesday sent out a real signal of intent yesterday by signing Smith and Ihiekwe.

Both of these players helped Rotherham seal promotion last season by delivering a host of impressive performances in the third tier.

Smith provided 24 direct goal contributions at this level while Ihiekwe averaged an impressive WhoScored match rating of 7.22 in League One.

If this duo are able to hit the ground running at Hillsborough, they could help Wednesday launch a push for a top two finish.

They’ve got to be up there because these are two great signings from a team that last season achieved exactly what they’re aiming to do this year.

Michael Smith showed incredible quality last season as he scored 18 goals and even though that’s his highest tally for a season, his numbers in other League One seasons haven’t been bad even when he was getting less game time.

As for Ihiekwe, he is a solid defender with the ability to add goals to his game too and he has shown his quality consistently in both League One and the Championship.

The fact the two players were in the same team last year gives them that advantage as they link up and they are two very big signings.

Moore has to make sure he uses his new players effectively but this is a sign of intent and they have to be up there next season.

The pair of Smith and Ihiekwe coming into Darren Moore’s side is quite exciting and gives the team a good platform to compete for a top two place.

The club have signed well this summer already and the addition of this Rotherham pair only strengthens their position in the league.

Both know what it takes to gain promotion having done so last year.

They were also important players in the side and performed excellently all campaign.

Smith’s goals in particular will be a huge boost to Wednesday’s chances.

The Owls will now fancy themselves to earn automatic promotion this season.
