Charlton Athletic got off to a fairly energetic start to the season as they came away from Accrington Stanley with a 2-2 draw at the weekend.

Following the appointment of Ben Garner as the club’s new manager this summer, the club are starting to transform the way they play in order to suit their new manager’s methods.

This weekend they welcome newly relegated Derby County and will be hoping they can pick up their first win of the season.

However, Derby look like a strong side following some of the additions they’ve made this summer so we asked FLW’s Charlton Athletic fan pundit Ben Fleming for his prediction for the weekend’s game: “I think it’s going to be a really tough game.

“I’ve been very impressed in the manner Derby have recruited given how little time they had between now and when they had their owners confirmed so I think they’re a much stronger proposition than what I thought they would be heading into this season.

“I think I was encouraged from what I saw against Accrington Stanley, I think we’re obviously still learning the processes and tactics that Ben Garner wants to employ.

“I think we saw periods in that first half where we controlled the game well and carved out chances well and periods in that second half where we didn’t do that and Accrington Stanley were able to get on the front foot.

“I think optimistically, I’d like to think, home performance we’d be able to sneak a 1-0 win, I’d probably be happy with a point as well but I’d like to think maybe if we can get our free flowing attacking football going that maybe we can sneak a goal against a good Derby team and look to hold out hope.

“So I’ll go for an optimistic 1-0 will but I think a point will also be not a bad result at this stage in the season.”

Quiz: Can you remember the score the last time Charlton Athletic played at these 26 stadiums?

What was the score when Charlton last played at Wembley Stadium?

The Verdict:

As Ben says, this looks to be a tough test this weekend especially as both teams are probably still in the process of settling into their new manager’s ways.

The Derby County side have a lot of strength and experience which will no doubt seem them be successful this season.

Charlton also have the ability to play some lovely football however, whether they can yet do that for 90 minutes is yet to be seen.

A point would be a good result for the Addicks but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Rams come out on top either.
