Leicester City are said to be among a number of clubs interested in Leeds United loan defender Ben White, according to a report from respected journalist Phil Hay in The Athletic.
The 22-year-old who is currently on-loan from Brighton and Hove Albion has earned rave reviews for his impressive performances so far this season, with Liverpool and Manchester United also said to be monitoring the central defender’s situation.
So would White be a good fit at the King Power Stadium? Is he good enough for the top-flight?
“This would be a good signing for the Foxes because he wouldn’t command the fee needed to sign someone of definite ‘top four’ quality, in the way they have been linked with other centre-backs.
“White would come into Leicester’s side as a relative Premier League unknown as he spends the full season at Elland Road, which might not give the guarantee that he can make the step up.
“However, there were no guarantees that White would perform at Leeds given he had never played in the second tier before but now he’s regarded as arguably the best centre-back in the division after 18 games.
“Leicester’s defence at present is formidable so it would be hard to see White stroll into the starting 11, but with Brendan Rodgers chasing European football, he definitely needs strength in depth, so investing in a young talent who is maturing more and by the week could be a very shrewd signing.”
“This could be a really smart bit of business from the Foxes.
“I will put my hand up and say that I was very concerned when Leeds turned to the relatively untested 22-year-old to replace Pontus Jansson but I was wrong–he has been a masterstroke.
“Defensively he has been almost unflappable this season, while in possession he is vital to the way the Whites play.
“The step up from the Championship to the Premier League is a difficult one but from what I have seen from him so far this season, he is ready.”
Would Ben White be a good fit at the King Power Stadium?
“If Leicester can secure a deal for White, it could turn out to be a fantastic bit of business by manager Brendan Rodgers.
“Since joining Leeds on a season-long deal from Brighton & Hove Albion, the defender has emerged as a key player for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
“One of the stand-out performers in the Championship this season, White’s ability to play out from the back could suit Leicester who tend to utilise a possession-based style of play at the King Power Stadium.
“Providing that the defender is able to hit the ground running in the Premier League, he could potentially take the Foxes to new heights in the not too distant future.”
